For What Purpose - Part 1
Published: 15 December 2011
We talk about God’s mission tonight and throughout these few evenings. Mission is not necessarily something that we do for God; it’s not as if we are doing God a favour. Mission is about obedience to the holy God, to fear God above everything else. And Paul picks up this idea of fearing God above everything else in Philippians 2. He says, ‘Therefore God exalted him,‘ that is, Christ, ‘to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord’ (vv. 9-11). And then he says, ‘Therefore, my dear friends . . . continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling' (v. 12). As we approach God we approach the holy God with fear.
