Paul finally comes to a climax. God ‘put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all (Eph 1:22,23). All of this is for the benefit of the church. Christ is absolute Lord of the universe. He’s head of all things and has been given to the church. William Barclay says that in these two verses Paul has one of the most adventurous and uplifting thoughts that man has ever had. Jesus is given to the church, in other words, for her advantage, for her benefit. This great Lord who is above everything is also our Shepherd, our Provider, our Protector, our Guard, our Guide, our Friend, our Comforter, our Counsellor. He’s not only Lord, he’s our Lord. Wonderful things have been said about Christ and his glory. Right at the climax, Paul says, ‘He’s for you – his greatness is directed towards you.’
