Ephesians beautifully combines theology and practice and it tells how people can have theology that drives them to behave in a Christian way. Paul has a three-fold strategy in this book: firstly, he gives a theological basis. This is the basis from which he exhorts the people and he does it beautifully, meditatively and devotionally. He gives the theology devotionally, lingering with the truths of the gospel, repeating them, going deeper and deeper to delve into the riches of what Christ has done for us. Five times in this book he talks about riches and four times about the inheritance that we have. Then he gives practical exhortations on how to live the Christian life. And thirdly, he presents all this within the context of the community, the body of Christ. We put Christianity into practice not alone but as a community. Theology, exhortation and community life: these are the keys to developing mature Christians who practise Christianity in their life.
